I have to admit, I'm not a big fan of the color pink but I am during this month.

On a personal side note, this is also the month I get my mammogram. No, I never planned it that way; it just happened. TMI? Too bad, because it is information we should share.

I remember my first mammogram. You can imagine I was scared because of all the horror stories you hear. Your imagination runs WILD when you hear the word "squish." Often we apply that word to a bug so it shouldn't be said anywhere else. A better word to describe a mammogram is uncomfortable because it is. But I was surprised at how quickly it's done. No matter what, it can help save lives.

For several years, my computer/Internet time starts with me clicking the "Click to Give" campaign on Breast Cancer Site. It's habit now along with my email, daily comic strips (Luann and One Big Happy), celebrity gossip sites and news. This programs helps to fund mammograms.

I also receive newsletters from The Army of Women. The Army of Women is an online campaign that promotes breast cancer prevention research studies in the US. Studies are in different cities and the call can be based on age, survivors, etc.

The 19th Annual Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure will be held on October 3rd across Canada. You can also Cook for the Cure. Host a Cook for the Cure party, along with your donations from the party KitchenAid Canada will donate $50 to CBCF. For those who need a little retail therapy, why not donate by doing what you love to do? Shopping and give by buying products from companies who donate funds to breast cancer research. Check out Shop for the Cure.

Personally, I think one of the biggest donations you can give to bring awareness to Breast Cancer Awareness month is to encourage a woman who hasn't gotten a mammogram to get one.

We have every right to take control of our own health.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; When I want to be. That means that there are some times that I am lazy and want a simple cooking solution. For those moments, I have shopped at M&M Meat Shops.

There was one time, I was REALLY lazy and shopped at M&M pretty often. Recently, M&M sent me this email:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 355px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_es5rewoIxAk/TIqytCsZPiI/AAAAAAAAAow/r0maQgNodf8/s400/M%26M+Meat+email.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5515417180555525666" />

I must admit I didn't know M&M had such great follow-up. And had I continued the easier cooking route in buying something ever 2-3 weeks, I wouldn't have. M&M has a huge database of customer memberships that keep a record of what you have bought and when. When he first did this routine when I could watch in on TV, I was a youngster or much younger than I am now. At that time, I hadn't acquired much stuff. Actually, I didn't have much of anything I bought myself. My stuff was bought by mostly my mom. She even picked out most of my stuff.

It's been over 25 years since I moved out of my mom's house, for the first time. And moving into my first apartment, I needed a lot of stuff. What is so amazing is a lot of the stuff I bought at time time, I still have. But I still bought more and bought new.

So with all this stuff, I recently decided that it was time to purge...again. You see, I purge stuff every year. At one time, I even had an in/out rule for shoes: a new pair in, an old pair out/donated. Let me tell you, as a dedicated shoe lover, that rule doesn't always work. Now back to purging.

Because I've moved a fair bit in my adult life (and no it's not running from the cops), I try to keep lean on stuff. It's not always easy though which requires me to purge every now and again. It would be great if I can purge at least 4x a year but it doesn't always happen like that.

Recently, I went through the big purge. This included getting rid of stuff from closets, rooms, and storage. It's the Big Purge. And it felt fantastic. I got rid of stuff that I hadn't used in ages and had no need for in the future.

There's still room for another purge but I will see to it in October. Until then, I'm not going to think about stuff except the "Stuff" George Carlin talks about in this video.

Enjoy!

Be

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 152px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_es5rewoIxAk/TFNAN_3HitI/AAAAAAAAAoI/HotOp7JbV8A/s200/bee.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499810179174599378" />
No, the title is not a typo. I often have a very hard time in taking my own advice.

Been there? Done that?

I have come across people in my life that like talking to me and hearing my thoughts on "stuff" particularly stuff in their lives. I don't come across as a know-it-all. At least I don't think so but I often have some great ideas. I'm one of those rare breeds that get jazzed and feed on collaboration, brainstorming, and free thought. Plus, spending time by myself helps fuel the creative/idea process.

Am I a Life Coach? No, but I play one on TV. I really don't but I could probably be one if I put my mind to it. Ah ha!

That's the point. I was just sitting here thinking about some advice I gave a friend not too long ago about making sure he makes time to have fun. This is in the midst of growing a business. My philosophy is that if you make time for fun, you free your mind of stress and pressure. Ideas and initiatives have space to grow. See where I'm heading with this?

If we aren't willing to take our own advice, how do we become experts or credible, for that matter? Maybe the focus is too much on advice and we mix it with opinion? Nevertheless, if we aren't willing to walk the walk that we are talking, why give it in the first place.

Tomorrow, I plan to take my own advice so I can relieve some pressure to have some creative thought for myself. So glad I finally got the message.

New Blog Series caled "Tread Lightly

Tread Lightly is a a new blog series that focuses on specific issues that can make or break us. Issues will be both personal and professional, relate to observations and a-ha moments.

For most of my adult life, I have been a single woman. No, this issue is not about me finding a man but about how being a single woman can affect other woman who aren't single. What compounds this issue is that I can get along well with men. Platonic relationships, of course.

Many single women aren't aware of how their single-dom can be a problem for others. When they go around wives, girlfriends and other women in committed relationships with them, they don't give much thought to their position. Many dress like they are on the prowl (insert "Cougar" reference HERE) because some single women are on the prowl and feel there's a potential hook-up/introduction at the next party, drinks at the bar, or pot luck. Oh, and they come prepared: dressed to impress, impeccably applied makeup, accentuating their best asset(s). Next thing you know, the invitations stop coming until there's a change in your relationship status on Facebook. It doesn't matter if it says "It's Complicated." This just means there is something to be complicated.

Now about the women in relationships near these single women (I've been there too). You may be justified in how you feel. But keep in mind most women don't want your man. They are so happy for you that they would do cartwheels up and down the street to celebrate your relationship. Don't leave the single ladies out of the mix. They are a good draw (and hook-up) for that particular friend of your man that you just cannot stand. She could be a great distraction for his endless nights at your place or numerous calls to your man to spend time with him when you already have plans--together.

Don't get me wrong. There are many committed women who are comfortable in their relationships and being around the singles. Those ladies ROCK! (I have been one of these too).

Nevertheless, for the single ladies and some of those committed ones, tread lightly.

Check this out...Hot New Trend: Gray Hair

Hot New Trend: Gray Hair
By: Maria Santoferraro

It is official: my gray hair is now considered trendy. Apparently, it’s all the rage on the fashion runways, and younger women are making a statement with silver and white highlights in their hair.

I was born a redhead, but over the years, it has darkened to an auburn shade and now is filled with natural silver highlights provided by age, daily dosages of stress, and a few golden highlights thrown in courtesy of the sun. Much to my hairdresser’s chagrin, I’ve never dyed my hair and never will! I know it would make me look younger, but I figure I’m saving lots of time and money. I don’t have to worry about showing my gray roots or having a bunch of chemicals seeping into my scalp. Teams have been "pitching" him left and right. The main contenders are the Cleveland Cavaliers (his current team and closest team to his childhood home of Akron), New Jersey Nets, New York Nicks, Chicago Bulls (his favorite team growing up), and the Miami Heat (team to 2 of his closest friends). Oh yeah, I also read the Clippers were in there too.

Reading the pros and cons, the logistics behind why this or that choice would work is fascinating. Oh, to be LeBron. $96.1 Million over 5 years on the line and five/six teams wanting you on their team. I'm sure there are other teams that would LOVE to have LeBron play for them but maybe they can't afford it.

As an unemployed marketing and sales professional, I would have loved to be in those meetings/pitches. How often do you have your CEO at a presentation? What did they offer? Did they use some small talk..."So LeBron, it sure is hot out, isn't it? How are the kids? And your mom?"

I have read the arguments behind what each team can offer LeBron, besides the money, of course. And while I said in the title that it's just business, is it?

It's never really "just business." You see, before it becomes business it's our life. It's our heart. It's our passion.

Most critics and analyst have talked about LeBron going to a particular team, few have used the term "employer." And this is where we add the business.

When it is a team, you can do what you love...pounding the boards, blocking shots, making a difference for the thousands and thousands of fan who just enjoy watching you play. It's personal. When it is an employer, we are talking about ticket sales and championships. Fans become indirect board members. It's business.

This morning I became an armchair sports analyst asking these questions:
- Would he want to play in Miami where he would be one of three stars?
- Would he want to play in Chicago in Jordan's legacy/shadow? (Ok, I did get that one from a real analyst but it made sense so I asked the question again.)
- How important is home town to him?
- Nicks or Nets? Which side of the bridge?

I wonder if anyone, besides his mom, has asked LeBron what's important to him? It's when we start looking at what's important that we make the decision based on it being personal or business.

You see, fascinating.

Again, I'm not a sports chick but I do like a good negotiation and a great press conference and the anticipation. Good thing I have TiVo to catch So You Think You Can Dance-the results show for me because I think I will be watching ESPN tonight.

Let's see if it's business or personal...or a combination of both.

UPDATE 6:51pm (PST)

LeBron James is going to the Miami Heat.

The Truth in Advertising - Anti-aging

This evening, I casually mentioned that most things a 20-something can do I can do much, much better but the 40-something guy would prefer the 20 plus year old to me. I'm not looking for a competition between me and the 20+ year olds. I'm smart. The difference is there are some things they can do that I choose NOT to do. Hell, I didn't want to do them when I was in my 20's. That's the great thing about aging...if you are smart about it you will recognize the wisdom that can come with it.

The Truth in Advertising
There's a good chance I wouldn't have made that comment tonight if something else wasn't already bugging me about aging. I'm seeing more and more commercial about "anti-aging" products. They cover everything from H-to-T (that's head-to-toe for those of you who don't watch America's Next Top Model). There are shampoos, body and face moisturizers, lip treatments, body washes... You name it and some cosmetic company has it. My question is simple: "just how old is the model in that anti-aging product commercial?"

It's my guess that the lady in the particular commercial I was watching was no more than 32, give or take 3 years. Would that be truth in advertising?

I remember watching an actress in a hair color TV ad not too long ago. The actress who is on a very popular television show about housewives that live on a particular street is 35 years old. She wanted to tell me that this particular brand of hair color is fabulous for getting rid of gray hair.

When I was 35, I did have a few gray hairs but not enough to worry about color to cover it. If I was coloring my hair, it was a statement based on whatever bad relationship I was in at the time. The gray hairs I had were the least of my problems.

It would be great to see a before and after of this spokesperson. In retrospect, she could be 50% gray and speaks to me from my 52" from experience. I'm not buying it though. Just like you shouldn't buy that I have a 52" tv.

Blog Post "RePost" - Trust Your Gut

I love Twitter. There have been numerous occasions where I turned it down. And if I hadn't my life would have been easier. Some offer not out of genuine reasons but with an ulterior motive often to make themselves feel better about who they are. Or because they know you will decline their offer so they don't have to do anything after all. Sometimes there's no one around. Other times there's too many.

Yes, I am talking about help.

This is one of those topics that's been brewing for a while. It came up some months ago when I mentioned self help in a meeting. That didn't go over well. A few didn't want to admit they could use some help. It was like it was a dirty word and for some people it is.

Maybe it starts as early as maybe two when we try to do things like our role models. Tying our shoes dressing ourselves feeding ourselves. I think we learn to say "I can do it" way to early.

Won't you please, please help me? Not an unreasonable question. I wonder how the world would change if we were more open to ask for help and offer it.

Political cause and effect

Anyone who knows me knows I really hate talking about politics. It was one of the topics my mom taught me not to talk about along with money and religion. These topics are no win but nonetheless passionate topics.

Regarding politics I like to stay in the gray area. And now is the best time to be there. But first let me explain the gray area.

The gray area is the place where nothing, no position fits exactly right. It is slightly irregular. You are not a democrat or republican. At one time you may have been an independent but now that requires a particular stand too.

I like to think the gray sees both sides but knows what they feel is best. They also don't associate their feelings with any side. They don't take sides. They vote the way they vote because they feel it's what needed at they time o balance the scale. Are you beginning to see where I'm going with this?

Political cause and effect

If people didn't feel so strongly about the c&e from the last administration the Republican candidate may have had a better chance. It could have been a landslide if he and his team stayed focus on one issue terrorism. But something went askew and the next action was something different and for a different reason than many thought was the right thing to do. People asked why and there wasn't a real answer. Or a believable answer.

My question is if we are asking the right question and focusing on the real issue? This is a lesson learned in sales. If you aren't getting closer to the sale with your client, there's another issue not being addressed.

For little ole me sitting in the gray area who tends to rely on a spiritual, soulful and philosophical outlook I see an issue. I see that certain folks don't want a resolution. They really don't want their agenda either because they know it's crap. They want to stay in a state without unity.

It has nothing to do with anyone giving in. In my gray area opinion it has more to do with misery wants company. Folks are angry and unhappy. Folks are spiraling out of control. And started before the financial breakdown.

More cause and effect.

I can share what can be done to change it but other thinkers, great thinkers have shared the solution. Hopefully soon someone will choose to listen.

No title to this post. A title is not necessary.

Today, along with so many people, I am remembering a day eight years ago.

There are some many things in my life that I can remember the details to the "t". I remember smells, songs that were played, specific moments where I would be including the clothes and shoes I wore. Tuesday, September 11, 2001 is one of those days.

I continue to think about and pray for the families and friends who lost loved ones that day and since, because of the actions of that day. I don't believe anyone will ever forget.

Eight years ago, a country and it's citizens came together. So why do we find ourselves so apart today? Just a question and something to truly think about.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 98px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_es5rewoIxAk/SqqtbOtcDZI/AAAAAAAAAlg/6dOLYcwDsIk/s320/45319_image.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5380303388164230546" />

The Debate Wages On

I'm in an interesting position. I am a US citizen living in Canada with permanent resident status. This means I have access to and covered by the Canadian health care system.

On my recent trip to Dallas, whenever someone learned I lived in Canada, the first question was about the health care system. This was never on the radar 8 years ago when I first relocated. Now, because it has been in the news as a comparable alternative to what's available in the US, everyone wants to know what is is really all about. I will share my answer with you a little later in this post.

Today, a former colleague posted a comment in response to this tweet:
"No one should die because they cannot afford health care, and no one should go broke because they get sick." His response was "seems like a no brainer; totally agree but know there's a better way than turning it over to the Gov."

My question is what's the better way? What's the alternative? My thought is if there was a better way, one would be in existence already. Wouldn't it?

More than anything I want to respect the beliefs of others. My mom taught me that to truly understand the position of others you need to walk a mile in their shoes. Of course, this lesson was in tandem with a Bible lesson but a good lesson nonetheless. With that said, I wonder what fuels the opposing positions on US health care?

Several years ago when I was gainfully employed in the US with employer-paid health care, I had a different position. I may have thought "why can't people work like me and have their employer pay for their coverage?" It was eleven years ago, I was younger, and didn't really see how important health care can be. Today, I have one parent retired paying health care out of their pocket (and it's not cheap. I saw the bill). I have another parent about to retire who has recently faced several expensive doctor and hospital bills NOT covered by his insurance. My view has changed because my overall circumstances have changed. I can view this topic differently. I have walked in a different pair of shoes than those eleven years ago.

Let's take a psychologist's approach to uncovering the concern. I can image a lot of people are concerned about their taxes. Some don't like the idea a health care system that is government run. What do sick people think? Where's the voice of the people living with illness? What are their thoughts on what is being proposed whether they have current health care or not?

Going back to my original question...What's the answer? Not sure if I haven't been really listening or not but what I haven't heard is preventative medicine. If I'm not mistaken, some companies wanted to stop. Sorry, the right term is "regulate" alternative medicine which includes vitamins, natural and organic products. Mmmm, makes me wonder?

Let's see how thoughts on health care possibly change in a couple of months. Sometimes I think we think first with our wallets and don't give thought for down the road. I attribute this thinking to available street parking. Sometimes, cars are allowed to park in the right lane of a busy street. There is always some cars that drive in that lane until they find themselves right behind the parked car. If they had given thought and some attention to looking more than one car length in front of them, they wouldn't find themselves behind a parked car.

Now on my response to the question: in my opinion there are some flaws to the system but overall it's OK. I don't believe a similar system would work in the US due to the population. I do believe their should be some regulation regarding costs and policies. I also believe measures for preventative medicine should be implemented. Nevertheless, nothing will be accomplished unless a majority see and understand the need for this right.

Harvest for the World

Where does your inspiration come from?

Just a question since this post is not about inspiration. There will be soon but just not today.

I'm inspired to write this post by the Isley Brothers and their song from 1976, "Harvest for the World." It's a powerful song and so relevant to today.

I guess if we truly are a king when will there be a harvest for the world, we need to ask what our contribution is to that harvest?

So many believe it can't be done. I'm not one of them. I believe it can happen and in my lifetime. I can't do it alone though but I know powerful people who support a true community worldwide.

Can you imagine? But where can we or should we start?

Let's think about what would be involved in we first understood and accepted that we are all part of a big picture. One speck of the world but truly one part of it.

What about greater acceptance of our community? Not just where we live and who we already know but embracing expansion? I can't say enough about service and volunteerism. I believe this is where the see is planted.

I also think it's important to watch your words. Do your words build up or tear down? This one can be a challenge and takes concious effort. If it tears down, you may want to consider my mom's advice..."if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all."

A harvest for the world? Let's start planting something today worthy of harvesting tomorrow.

In the meantime, be inspired as I was.

Song Lyrics

Rethinking Work-Life Balance

During a conversation with one of my friends this weekend, we are talking about how much jobs require of their employees. Because of this, the term "work-life balance" was created.

But does "work-life balance" really exist?

If you think about it, the term gives equal importance to work and life. All things AREN'T created equal.

Dissecting it, we know life is the big umbrella and everything falls into it. A better analogy is looking at life as a pie. Family is indeed a great percentage of that pie. So are friends. The other components of your life are also percentages of the pie. So where does work fit in?

If it is work-life balance, wouldn't we be talking about two equal pies? But work is indeed part of our life and definitely a percentage of a life pie. Rethinking this, we need to determine what part of the pie we apply to work. That's your decision.

From this point on, I'm calling it "life balance" and therefore ensuring that each slice of the life pie is a part of my life and not the whole.

Cultural Icons

It's been a tough week for entertainment. This week, we lost three of the greatest celebrities within their areas of entertainment: Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson.

Being a Generation X'er, Ed McMahon was more famous to me as the host of Star Search rather than Johnny Carson's sidekick. I didn't get a chance to always watch Johnny Carson since it was after my bedtime but Star Search came on during primetime. And everyone wanted to be a star!

Can you believe Farrah Fawcett (then Fawcett-Majors, since she was married to the Six Million Dollar Man) was only on Charlie's Angels for one year with a few guest appearances in the subsequent years. Goes to show you how important that first year can be. I wanted to be an Angel and never thought I couldn't be. I think it had to do with the cool Mustang with the side strips and the car phone. After Charlie's Angels and like everyone else, her performance in The Burning Bed blew me away. Talking about a shining a new light on domestic abuse. Maybe a couple of channels should show that movie again, and soon.

And Michael Jackson? What more can I say that hasn't already been said? I grew up with Motown parents. My mom was a major Four Tops fan. My dad loved The Temptations. I always said it was this division that really caused their divorce. Nevertheless, they did agree on the greatness of Motown and the talent that came out of that company. Luckily for me and my sister, we had a Motown group too -- The Jackson 5.

Our record collection consisted of The Jackson 5 and Sesame Street. What a great combination? I knew about ABC, Dancing Machine, Never Can Say Goodbye, I Want You Back, and I'll Be There.

I feel privileged that I was a fan of Michael Jackson before he became the King of Pop. I was sitting in front of the tv watching MTV when the Thriller video debuted. I knew every dance step for every Michael Jackson video (although I was smart enough not to try that infamous, anti-gravity Smooth Criminal move). And while I will miss him, in spite of the drama that plagued his adult life, I am grateful that he was a significant part of my growing up and so many others in the world.

RIP Ed, Farrah and Michael. And thank you for your contributions to entertainment.

Redifining the phrase "gone hiking"

Today the Governor of South Carolina, Mark Sanford, admitted that the real reason for his being MIA was that he was in Argentina with his mistress instead of the Appalachian Trail as a member of his staff stated. I think I want to add "gone hiking" as a new term to the urban dictionary.

In my opinion this is not a Democrat or Republican issue. This is about trust.

If Joe Q. Public or Joan Q. Public cheated on their significant other, it's an issue of trust. For me, when it's an elected official, it goes a bit deeper. You see, these people choose to become public figures and often promise to do the best for their constituents. But then I wonder about how I fit into the overall picture.

If they could lie to the person they say they love and blatantly jeopardize their relationship with their children, than where do I stand in the scheme of things as just a constituent, just a voter they don't know.

Gov. Sanford felt it was necessary to let the public know his wife has known about the affair for five months. So? Does that make it right? That only lets me know how stupid (a word I don't like to use to describe someone) it was for Gov. Sanford to fly to Argentina to be with his mistress for 7 days in the first place. And I read somewhere he said he cried all the time he was there. Ok, I'm supposed to believe that too?

It seems that with the growing list of cheating politicians (male and female), many still don't learn.

The question is...is marital infidelity a sign of political infidelity? Maybe one day we will truly know the answer.

Uncovering your True Self

During the span of one week, I had two business acquaintances compliment me on my personality and how fun and happy I am. At the time I didn't feel fun or happy. I was stressed!

Later I gave it more thought and attention. I was basically living in parallel universes. In one, people saw me as fun, happy and full of joy. In the other, I was stressed, neurotic and at my wit's end. So which one was real?

I realized that both were real but the one that was true was the one I chose to believe and live. Can you guess which one it was?

The stressed, neurotic me wanted to over take the joyful, fun-loving me. Why? Probably because there seems to be some weird comfort in being stressed and neurotic. But there is true joy in being joyful.

But regardless of how stressed I was or neurotic I felt, I could (and would) always convey a happy me. In groups, at social events and in committee meetings, I would often be what I have learned is my "True Self." During the very few moments that my True Self couldn't shine, people knew something was really wrong.

I have had a few months to embrace my True Self and when I do, at times something comes up to try to shake me from that place. In sticking with my guns and standing my ground, I feel 8 feet tall and as though I can handle anything that comes my way.

So what's your True Self? I think one way to uncover this (if you need help) is to think about what people say to you about you. What do they compliment you on that is emotional and/or soulful? And positive? Once you have a good idea of this, start walking in it. Let it guide you before anything else. Talk about an Aha feeling. Or, better yet, a feeling of Ahhhhhhhh!

Banishing negativity

In an earlier post, I wrote about how important it is to believe. But it can be hard when negativity comes in all forms, shapes and sizes.

My advice? Banish it. Anything and everything that is inhibiting you from believing, keeping the faith and creating your reality? Kick it to the curb!

This action will include removing some people from your life. For many, it doesn't have to be a full removal, only temporary. One way to balance this is to learn finesse in changing the subject or practicing inner meditation. Sometimes the best thing to do is to make sure you have a spiritual wall of protection BEFORE meeting with anyone you feel is negative or has a negative perspective on life.

If you need a notecard with a reminder or written on lipstick on your bathroom mirror..Do It!

Let your walk be the example for so many around you.

A new path

One of the hardest lessons to learn is that everything will be alright. My parents have been telling me this for ages. You hear it but some times, actually most times, you can be so consumed by your circumstance it's hard to believe. Or, you don't allow yourself to believe.

Well, I'm saying "believe it."

Another saying is that "God doesn't close a door without opening a window." What it all comes down to is what you choose and allow yourself to believe.

In the last two weeks, my life has been enriched with more dancing, smiling, laughing and creativity. I also know I have been entrusted to help others.

Years ago, I was asked what was my passion. It was the hardest question for me to answer...at that time. Today I know what I am passion for and about: causes, community, energizing and inspiring others, and helping people recognize and use their strengths.

If joy and happiness are truly infectious, I look forward to how my new path in life and career will help others.

Bullies & Bullying Part 1

I believe it was last week when I read about Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover. He was an 11-year-old boy who committed suicide after being bullied and harassed.

I remember when I was in elementary school, some kids made fun of me. I was kind of prim and proper, not at all like I am as an adult today. It was rare that a hair was out of place or I was mussed up. And some kids did make fun of me. But what they didn't realize is I had the biggest bully at home. Ok, she is not really a bully but I was afraid of her. Even at 42 years of age, I watch what I say around her. You see, the quasi-bully I was afraid of was my mom.

No, my mom is not a bully. But she is a tough mother. She had guidelines for me and my sister that we had to follow. So when I didn't get my hair messed up or always pulled up my socks it was because I didn't want to face the consequences at home. For me the question was "who was I more afraid of--the kids at school or my mom? Easy choice. Especially when you know what side of the bread is buttered and you want the new Barbie.

It was also a different time. Bullies have always been around but at my elementary school, everyone knew everyone. It was a community within a community. The parents didn't need a phone tree, parents were involved at the school and in school events, and parents and teachers "hung out." I know for sure that three of my teachers knew my mom's number at work. Hell, they played cards together. And yes, my mom worked. So she was an involved parent at the school and worked? Yes.

With this type of community it's hard to have bullies. If I even mentioned something that wasn't just right with another kid, you know what she would do? She would go to her notebook (no true organizers in those days) and call the kid's parent, mom or dad. Yes, many dad's were in the picture too. Even if the parents were divorced, the community back then knew the dads because they would be involved with school carnivals or athletic events too. I said it was a community.

As for as the "haves" and the "have nots" no one cared. Yes, there were some kids in my class that lived in big houses, had more stuff, and in general, their families had more money. In my class we had the doctor's kid, the pharmacist's kid and the successful business owners' kids. It was just the way it was. But they were in the same school with the teacher's kid, bank employee's kid, and me, the kid of a post office worker and reservation sales agent. The parents had something in common. They all wanted the best for their children and thought it was this particular school.

What would it take to get our communities back or build new ones like the one in which I grew up? Until then, how can we teach people one of my favorite phrases from SNL's Joy Behar...So what? Who cares?

In the meantime, my thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their children to suicide due to bullying and harassment.

The Art of the Whisper

The title of this blog sound so...poetic. It's not. It is all about whispering.

The other week I attend a seminar, The Art of Sales, at the Centre in Vancouver for the Performing Arts. The seminar was not cheap and it was all do with no food served! Hello, this was a serious seminar.

As I am sitting in my seat, taking notes on sales, negotiations and presentations, the gentleman (I use the term very loosely) began talking. Talking while a presenter who we paid to hear speak begins talking. My noisy neighbor is not talking so loud as to disturb the presenter but he was disturbing me.

I believe that being a good audience member of a presentation comes from having to have given presentations. Evidently, Mr. Loud Mouth has never had to be on the presentation side. Otherwise, he would have been more respectful of not only the speaker but to those in attendance.

I guess some people never learned to whisper. I did and when I learned I was taught it was rude. That's how we Southerners are. Whispering can be considered rude. And it is especially rude when you are in a conversation with others and one person turns to "whisper" to another leaving the rest of the group out. Yep, that's rude.

But, in the instance of an all day seminar with five well-known presenters in attendance to help me with my job and increase my sales skills, whispering is all right with me. I encourage it.

What is a whisper? A whisper can be different things to different people. Here is the perfect way to whisper...lean in close to the person you need to convey your message say what you have to say in a tone and volume that only they can hear as not to disturb or offend the people near you. Namely me!

Can someone share this with Mr. Loud Mouth.

History made!

Wow, Barack Obama is the new President elect of the United States of America.

My greatest hope is that President elect Obama will be able to bring the country together. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed and do a lot of praying that not only will people accept change but embrace it.

My maternal grandmother passed away in July at the age of 92. I'm sure when she was paying a poll tax back in the day, she never thought this day would and could come. Worth. In first class with my second glass of white wine and after reading about 3/4 of Diahann Carroll's book, "The Legs Are The Last To Go." I am not at the chapter about her being diagnosed with breast cancer yet but I have a lot of thoughts:

Breast Health Awareness Month

Strong women

Troubled women who need to overcome

Stress

Before I get to these four, let me tell you about my relationship with Diahann Carroll. I'm a fan. From previous posts, you know I love movies, films, television, and theater. Hello Diahann Carroll. Movies such as Carmen Jones, Porgy & Bess, and the ultimate, Claudine. TV includes Julia, Dynasty (when nighttime dramas ruled) and recently Grey's Anatomy which I truly adore from the first episode. Theater...ok I have never seen her live but I do love the theater.

Back to Carol Diahann Johnson. I saw her on The View and knew I needed to read this book if for no other reason than to learn of her affair with Sidney Poitier. So far it is a great read and I would love to send her a letter letting her know how much I enjoy the book and to thank her for sharing her story. Think of the number of black women who have shared their story, let along women in general. We are fabulous but don't do enough to remind people how great we are.

Now on to the list..Breast Health Awareness Month has affected me much differently this month. Over the last year, The Breast Cancer Site has been a daily Internet site I visit. It is my way of doing my part and giving back by clicking to give free mammograms. I also signed on for The Army of Women with Dr. Susan Love and Avon. And I scheduled my 2nd screening for this month for when I am back in Vancouver.

I implore everyone to do what they can to help stop breast cancer.

#2 is Strong Women. We all are strong no matter our race, creed, or religion. So why do we tear each other down? And, why don't we share our stories more? Anything we have experienced is going to help our sisters, and it helps our children. I don't have any but if I can help those younger than myself, please let me.

#3 Aren't we all in need to overcome? I'm only 3/4 of the way through Diahann Carroll's book but it struck me that I have similarities with Ms. Carroll. So what makes race or religion, culture, economic status different, a common denominator? We all have to overcome.

Ah, and then there is stress. Stress is a bitch, isn't it? I've lived with it all my life. Luckily now that I am more aware of it, I can do a better job of combating it. Refer to #3

Now that I am older I think more about my overall health. A great part of that is making sure I do my best to keep stress at bay.

The only way I can sum up this post is to encourage you to take care of yourself. By doing so, you help to heal others.

Breast Health Awareness Month

This month, I have been very moved to act. Here are a couple of ideas:

Get a mammogram (especially if you are over 40)

Click to give free mammograms at thebreastcancersite.com

Participate in CIBC Run for the Cure (Canada)

Participate in Race for the Cure

Join The Love/Avon Army of Women which offers you the chance to partner with research scientists to find a cure

Or, just support the cause by purchasing any of the number of "pink" items that will donate a percentage of sales to breast cancer research.

Let's do our part to help save lives.

There's Hope

I've been gone. Before I divulge into my thoughts of the movie and the personal feelings that it brought up for me, let me explain how it got here.

I LOVE MOVIES! I always have. Actually anything entertainment is right up my alley but it has to be visual. Just listening to music doesn't do it for me. A concert does since I need to see the entertainer.

OK, I don't watch every movie. I tend to avoid horror. I did a lot of that back in the 80's. I'm pretty selective about movies with subtitles. If I wanted to read, I would get a book. I have always found Hollywood interesting. What drives directors and actors to do what they do? Some are good at it, some aren't. Some make some really bad script choices.

Many of the movies I have seen speak to me. Miracle at St. Anna is one of those.

I remember when Spike Lee came on the mainstream scene back in 1986 with She's Got to Have It. Back then, he was not only writing his films but also directing and acting in them. I even saw him once when I was visiting my friend Monica at Spelman College in Atlanta. It was a year or so before School Daze.

I'm a fan but I am also honest about not seeing everything he's done. But I knew I would have to see Miracle at St. Anna.

I saw the trailer as soon as it was available online. I admit it, I visit apple.com/trailers at least once a week. I also looked up the movie on Internet Movie Database (which I visit daily). Everything I read and saw on this movie didn't do it justice.

It hit home and it hit home hard. The movie has a number of stories but the foundation highlights the contribution of black soldiers during World War II. Some of those Buffalo Soldiers, as they were called, served in the 92nd Infantry Division. They fought for the United States at a time when equal rights did not exist. Segregation was the way of life in the USA in 1944.

Miracle at St. Anna reminds us of the hardships black Americans faced during the Second World War. And many of those hardships, prejudice and racism still exist. I was one of the people sitting in that movie, reminded. And I cried. But then I laughed.

I laughed at how significant this movie is especially opening on the same date as the first Presidential debate.

I'm sure those men, those Buffalo Soldiers never imagined that a black man (OK, biracial man) is in a position to be the next President of the United States. Those black soldiers were of many that fought for us. They fought for ALL OF US, every American.

I tend to keep my political thoughts private but I will say this...I want a President who will fight for ALL Americans. Just like the Buffalo Soldiers did.

Accepting change

Change is one of the hardest things to accept. And sometimes, actually most times, no matter what we do to stop it, change occurs anyway.

Is change inevitable? Maybe but we can never know for sure in what or whom. Or when it will come.

For most of us, the reason change is so difficult is that we feel it upsets our balance. I would say it ties to expectations.

I remember when I first separated from my ex-husband. There were a number of reasons why I didn't want the separation or subsequent divorce. Nonetheless, it was change. A big change. Just as big as when we got married. One change, the first in getting married, I was ready for. I prepared for it for months. I thought about and looked forward to not only the actual wedding but the idea of living together, and being married. The change that came with the separation and divorce was more sudden.

I never had a time to prepare for it. I could say this is a typical trait of mine. I like to be in control. Often, I have to be in control. But some things we can't control. And change is one of them.

So what do we do when we can't control change? I think the first step, as with anything, is in knowing we can't. Accepting we can't. Then what?

We accept change. We are better people if we fully embrace it. And one major lesson I have learned is that when we choose to embrace it, we should not lose our "happy place."

Happiness, positive thinking & the law of attraction

I remember when I was little, my mother often said to me to "think positive." She said this to me anytime I was stressed about an issue in my life. And believe me, there were many.

Now, so many years later, I have adopted positive thinking. You really don't believe it until you see it in operation in your life but it does exist.

The Secret brought this out to the mainstream and there are so many other authors and life coaches who follow the same principles. I don't want to tell you how much time I spend on Oprah.com reading anything that's going to help me stay in a place of mental and emotional well-being.

I came away from a recent visit to my Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) doctor with one simple prescription...Be Happy. Now, when Dr. Wang gives me a prescription I truly take it to heart. I couldn't let those two simple words go. They stuck with me all day. And in following my normal approach to a new idea, I needed to do some research.

The first place I looked for research on happiness was home. You see, I buy books often and most of the time; I never crack the spine until it's the perfect time. In my personal library I found a book I purchased over a year ago, 365 Health and Happiness Boosters. When I bought it I only scanned it and didn't fully embrace the ideas in presented. I found it on my shelf and it has been by my side ever since. I will share some of its wisdom in future posts.

I'm in the middle of researching happiness and I realize -- happiness is not something you are. It's a choice. You choose to be happy. The flip side is you choose not to be sad.

Part of my choosing to "be happy" is writing a list each month of things in life that give me joy. I'm doing this at the first of the month as a way to bring that joy with me for those 28-29-30-31 days of that month. I am starting the month with an intention.

I also completed my Vision Board. A vision board is a visual reminder of your goals, places you want to visit, accomplishments, etc. Keep in mind those visions require something from you not just thoughts. They come with responsibility. Visuals work very well for me so a vision board was up my alley.

I visited Christine Kane's blog on how to create a vision board. This wasn't just a task. It became a vocation. It forced me to look at my life, not just the here and now but down the road, my future. I considered what was important to me and those visuals became a part of my board. So far I understand I can have and/or experience everything on my board.

As for being happy, that's an accomplishment too. When I find myself in a place of negative thinking, I shake myself out of it pretty quickly. I don't like the way it feels so I choose not to feel that way any longer. It's amazing how a change in attitude and belief can affect those around you as well. Because in the midst of choosing happiness, those around you can't get past the Happy Barrier.

If you take away anything, take away this...Be Happy!

BCHRMA Wine Tasting Event

One of the best times during the year is being able to attend the BCHRMA Wine Tasting Event.

Before the event in 2006, I wasn't really interested in wine. Now, after starting a blog for Hodes Canada, I have a better understanding of this blogging business.

So I am back and what an interesting time to be back...during an election year. As you know, there is plenty of sniping during an election year. The interesting thing is that most of the sniping comes not from the candidates but their camps and their supporters.

I just find it very interesting that anyone feels it's necessary to compare themselves to the competition. The most famous comparison is Coke vs. Pepsi.

One of the reasons I love Coca Cola is because of the taste but also because of their commercials. Besides "I like to teach the world to sing..." I like that the Coke commercials rarely if ever compared themselves to Pepsi. Pepsi, on the other hand, were known for their comparison commercials. Remember the Pepsi challenge?

If we apply the same thinking to the Presidential candidates, is it in their benefit to compare themselves to their opponent? Or, does it hold more weight to stand on their beliefs, promises, and their plan for the people.

I'm a firm believer that if you have something to offer, you don't need to compare yourself to anyone whether that be in business or personal. Or in an election.

What's in a name?

"Bond, James Bond."
"They call me Mr. Tibbs."

I have recently started the long process of changing my name. No, not to hide from the feds (funny!) but returning back to my maiden name.

Since September 2000, I used the last name of my ex-husband. Now seven years later, I choose to return to my maiden name after a divorce.

There was so much joy and happiness in learning to write my new name. I think I may have skipped into the Social Security office to complete the first step in adopting my new married name. Banking, credit cards, employers, insurance, magazines...I was elated to let all these people know I had gotten married and was a new person.

Seven years later and one year after the divorce is final, I am returning to the name my daddy gave me. I even went as far to ask my dad if I could have it back. He agreed and even welcomed me back. Way cool! But the process in going back to my maiden name hasn't been an easy one. Some could say it is because of the reason. I just think it has more to do with the necessity of it.

I knew this day would come. I knew before the divorce was final that I would return to my maiden name. If I had children, it would be a different story. I would probably still be using my ex-husbands last name, for my children's sake.

I have to consider the person I have become during the last seven years, particularly the last four. I'm much stronger and smarter, more optimistic on some things and wiser. Overall, I think I'm a better person. And the me I am now, with my name should get credit for that.

Vacation is Over!

Today is my first day back in the office after seven days vacation. Not too bad of a first day back but you have to build up to it, that's for sure.

While on vacation, I ventured to the beautiful city of Boston. The city of clam chowder (yummy), Red Sox (not the kind you put on your feet), and so much history it made my head spin. It has been a long, long time since I took American History but I can say that it all seemed to start in Boston. Paul Revere, John Hancock, Samuel Adams, the Declaration of Independence, Crispus Attucks, the Boston Tea Party - it truly is an amazing city and I am honored to have been a guest for five days.

As I have gotten older, I try to see the good in everything. I don't like for my choices to cloud or belittle someone else's. It just doesn't seem right and plus, I have never liked people doing that to me. I believe if we pay attention, there is good everywhere. Now let me apply this to my visit to Boston.

First, one of my best friends lives in the area. Alicia moved to Boston in 2001 to be with her man. They were married in 2005 and now she is expecting her first child, a little boy. I went to visit her, actually surprise her at her baby shower on Saturday. So Boston has that going for it. One of my closest friends lives there.

Boston has great history and great shopping. But it also has some crazy driving, crazier parking issues, and it's expensive. I lucked out and found a hotel (for my first night - I would be staying with Alicia and her family the rest of the time) for a decent price. A price I am accustomed to. But when I was looking, I thought I would be spending all my shopping money on a room. That would be a travesty!

I had a great time there and I am still awed by being able to see this great place. Being in Boston helped me appreciate again being an American, being part of the history of this country. There's always controversy. Always! We don't always do the right things. But we must be sincere with our apology and not make the same mistake again. I'm thinking about the Pilgrims and the Indians.

Have you heard of Crispus Attucks? He was on of the first to be killed in the Boston Massacre. I know about Crispus Attucks because I learned about him when I was young. He is part of my history being an African American or Black person in the US. I saw the place he fought for American Independence. I saw the place his body rested before burial. This was in 1770. We know how many rights a Black man had in 1770 but he was there and he died there. Funny but that, to me, is what makes us great but also what links us together. Why is there racism when folks who have died for our country didn't die in the name of either black, white, red, brown, etc.? I guess that's something we forget.

After taking the tour of Boston, I realized I have never taken a tour of Vancouver and I have been here for six years. I will be taking that tour this summer, maybe even on Canada Day. We will see.

Another great thing about being in Boston was seeing my friend. Alicia is going to have her first baby soon (maybe even on my birthday) and she is happy. Guess what? That makes me happy! She will be a great mom.

The Art of Forgiveness

This post today has to do with forgiveness. I have some forgiving to do. A lot of forgiving to do. I know this because I had a dream last night about my ex-husband and I was angry with him. REALLY ANGRY! I was tormenting him because I was so angry and hurt. That's how I know I need to forgive.

I have had these dreams before where in them, I torment him. I have had a lot of them. Here is the background...we separated October 2003 and the divorce was finalized October 2006. Three years! Three long years. I didn't file for the divorce because I didn't want it. But, I was at his mercy to file for three years. And he kept putting it off during those three years until September 2006. He never gave me an explanation or reason as to why.

I think my latest dream which has me tormenting him has to do with a realization I had. I have a friend who is pregnant with her first baby. I can't wait. She's going to be a great mom as all of my friends that are moms are. And even though I have always said I didn't want a child, I wonder if I ever really wanted one. I talk about the responsibility and it is a lot but I am sure I would make the best of being a mom and be a good one. My friend's pregnancy is making me rethink my decision not to have children. But now, I am in that "risky" pregnancy age (I will be 41 in August). I think in my subconscious, I believe that if my ex would have moved forward with the divorce, I would have still had time to decide and possibly, move forward with having a child.

It seems a bit far-fetched, I agree. But I do still have some bitterness and anger regarding the marriage, separation, divorce and everything in between. And, I have to also admit that I have been wondering when I would be ready to start dating again. Yes, I haven't dated anyone since December 1999. Long time, I know. And I agree. But, now I have some additional trust issues that I need to work through. For a half of a second over the weekend, I thought I was ready. Then I broke out in a cold sweat (just like James Brown explained). Ok, it wasn't that bad but I was uncomfortable with the thought down to my bones.

I know I need to forgive before I can move on. I don't know how it works for others but this is my path. I just don't know how. I thought I already had but it is painfully obvious that I haven't. My dream tells the story.

So, if you happen to run across this blog and read this post, I am open to hearing your comments on forgiveness.

The benefit of giving back

Today was my first day back in the office after several days off. I have to say, days off are a very good thing. Unlike many people, I was lazy and stayed very close to home. I saw Dreamgirls (again), caught up on my magazine reading and even finished a book. Don't you love a good mystery?

Today, I was a member of a panel talking about networking for The Minerva Foundation. I had a chance to talk today to a group of 20 women about the workforce and networking.

What a rush!!! Not only do you have a captive audience but you know these women are excited about doing something great. I love that energy! I am a firm believer in giving back. Think about what you have. Not what you don't have but what you have. Everyone is special and unique and has something to share that someone else can benefit from. We are such a blessed people. And we all have something to give. I have had some great volunteer opportunities. I have mentored a group of "high-risk" middle school girls. I have worked on a Habitat for Humanity home for one day while on vacation. I have helped feed the homeless. I have donated money to a number of causes that have touched my heart. And now I have the chance to work with The Minerva Foundation to help women be empowered. HOW COOL IS THAT!!

To all of those women who have gone through months of carrying a baby, labor for however many hours, late nights waiting up for your kids to return, sacrificing what you want for your child, and for realizing that you aren't perfect and have made some mistakes...let me say

Happy Mothers Day!

How do you title your first blog?

I never thought blogging would be for me but here I am. Just thank Blair Underwood. Why? Well, I found that he has a blog by way of his website by way of Wikipedia. And I found all this after doing a search for "The Bible Experience." Funny how one search on the Internet can lead to so much stuff. Maybe my creating this blog has nothing to do with Blair Underwood after all but a higher power.

I'm writing my first entry the day after the Super Bowl. I grew up in Dallas where football is king. Ever heard of the Dallas Cowboys? America's Team? I know, I know. There are folks in San Fran, Philly, and DC who would challenge me on that nickname but it is what it is. Don't blame me. Blame Howard Cosell or whatever announcer game the team this moniker. I wasn't even born yet.

Which leads me to being born. Today is the six month mark from me turning 40. Unlike a lot of women, I was looking forward to this birthday. It's probably because most people don't think I look 40. Talk about a blessing. But these days, what is the gauge for aging and age. I told myself that I would celebrate this birthday for six months. Time sure flies and I still have some more celebrating to do. So I have decided to continue to celebrate until I turn 41 which brings more celebration!

Since my profile hasn't been completed, I will give you some information about me here. A good place to start since this is an introduction. You know I'm from Dallas and I'm 40. I enjoy travel and have a lot of the world to see. That being said, I am also a homebody. In this crazy, mixed-up world, I love my comforts of home. My place. My space. I have always loved to dance which I still do. I'm actually considering a pole-dancing class to let out my inner sexy girl. But from day 1 or whenever, I loved entertainment. Not entertaining although I can be funny, quirky and entertaining when I want to be. I love movies/films, tv, and theater (or theatre for my Canadian compadres). Music, only to a certain extent. I'm more visual. I'm a Grey's Anatomy nut so be prepared to see my comments online after the show Thursday night.

I also enjoy films and Hollywood gossip. Sorry to all of the celebrities who have entertained me through tv or film but look, your lives and decisions are interesting. I see you through a box or a big screen and wonder what makes you tick. Not really just interested in some of the choices you make. It helps me in not looking at my own.

One ultimate guilty pleasure for me is the spa. Day spa, spa resort, spa hotel, health spa, it doesn't matter. I love to be pampered. I love that there are elements of health and well-being that come from the spa. LOVE IT! And I'm overdue.

I'm sure I can find more to say but I will save some for later.
